Partnership for Research with African Newcomers
Launched in 2022, the Partnership for Research with African Newcomers (PRAN) is an intersectoral partnership of primarily universities and community-based organizations investigating the experiences of Sub-Saharan African immigrants and refugees (SSAI) in Canada.
Co-funded by SSHRC and PRAN partners, PRAN members are posing new questions and approaches to explore and understand the experiences of SSAI communities, and in this way, contributing to advances in non-Western ways of knowing through feminist, resilience, and Afro-centric theoretical approaches.

African immigrants to Alberta are faced with array of challenges during transition and integration into their new home. These challenges are grouped into five main elements below.
Rebuilding Life in a New Homeland
Research findings that enhance immigrants’ and refugees’ (henceforth “immigrants”) adaptation to Canadian life are crucial, as Canada relies on newcomers for population growth, labour supply, and cultural diversity. Successful adaptation is important to newcomers who, in turn, see this country as a haven where they can find economic opportunities.
